Business Name Rules in Ghana: Choose Your Business Type

Start with the business type before you settle on a name. Ghana naming rules change depending on whether you are registering a sole proprietorship, company, partnership, nonprofit, subsidiary name, or external company.

Check a business name

A business name is not checked in isolation. ORC looks at the name, the filing type, and whether the wording could confuse the public. That is why the same words can be fine for one route and a problem for another.

Start with the entity type, then choose the name. LTD, PLC, and LBG are company suffix rules under the Companies Act, 2019. Words such as & Co, & Sons, Group, Holdings, and Foundation need a structure that matches what the name suggests.

Registrar approval still controls A name can pass a basic search and still be refused if it is the same as, too similar to, misleading, undesirable, or written in a foreign language that needs interpretation.

What usually gets names refused

  • The name is too close to one already on the register.
  • The suffix points to the wrong legal structure.
  • The wording implies government, banking, insurance, education, pharmacy, charity, or public authority approval.
  • The name says there are several owners when the filing is for one owner.
  • An external company tries to add Ghana or Branch wording that does not appear in the foreign documents.
